Free People has bohemian-style clothing that would make any green-girl swoon, but I was excited to find out that they host a number of wellness retreats around the world. That's how I stumbled across this event, Free People Escapes To Malibu, a fundraiser for Girls Inc with a vegan dinner from Honey Hi and a musical performance from Ashe.
The event took place at The Fig Tree Ranch in Malibu, a biodynamic farm with a long history of growing delicious figs. Biodynamic farming is essentially organic farming (no gmo's or pesticides), but takes it one step further by incorporating philosophical components about being intrinsically connected with nature. Biodynamic farming does not degrade the soil because it simply lets the soil be soil without destroying it. We were separated by our astrological signs to take a tour around the garden with owner, Kerry Clasby.
The plant based meal from Honey Hi included technicolor veggie skewers, baked beans, purple cornbread, and a salad filled with vibrant edible flowers. Honey Hi prides itself on cravable and sustainable comfort food (all things I love). Growing up in Missouri, I know a thing or two about comfort food and I'll be the first to admit that Honey Hi exceeded ALL of my expectations. As we sat down together under the table lights, each dish was fresh and delicious.
One of the best parts of this event was its core mission of donating to Girls Inc. That, along with the sustainability component, inspired me to get a tick along with my bee-keeper buddy Nikki. Girls Inc is a non-profit that helps create safe spaces outside of the home for girls in marginalized communities. It empowers girls to learn unique skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
